A shooters licence authorises the holder to possess and use only firearms of a category specified in the licence. All firearms must be registered. The cost of registration is incorporated in a Permit to Purchase or Acquire a Firearm. The following categories are available:
A - Shotguns or Rimfire rifles other then pump action or self loading. Air rifles or shot gun rim fire combination.
B - Muzzle loading, centrefire rifles, other than self loading, shot gun and centrefire combinations
C - Self loading rimfire rifles with a capacity of no more than 10 rounds, self loading and pump action shotguns with a capacity of no more than 5 rounds. Tranquilliser guns.
D - Self loading centrefire rifles, self loading or pump action shotguns with a capacity of more than 5 rounds. Self loading rimfire rifles with a capacity of more than 10 rounds. Firearms, other than pistols, less than 70cm long and capable of being concealed on or about a persons body.
H - Pistols and air pistols.
Applicants are subject to conviction checks and domestic violence or restraining order checks. Applicants must be deemed to be a fit and proper persons, over the age of 18, have completed an approved firearms training and safety course.
If shooting on crown land, shooters must have a crown land permit. If shooting on private land, shooters must have permission from the owner.
