Advice on Soil Surveys, Soil Maps, Land Suitability and Capability, Good Quality Agricultural Land, Acid Sulfate Soils - Queensland

Description

This support service is provided to:

  • promote sound land development, use and management of rural lands
  • prevent land degradation, and
  • ensure that land and soil is suited to its purpose and use or that land management practices are not applied to land unsuited to its present use in order to conserve the quality of the soil.

Soil data supports hydrological and landscape modelling to predict various forms of land degradation including:

  • salinity hazard and risk
  • acid sulfate soil risk
  • erosion hazard
  • soil physical decline
  • soil acidification
  • soil fertility decline

Using its extensive land resource information and map database, the Soil and Land Resource Group and Land Resource Officers in regional centres advise landholders, industry, consultants and governments on:

  • the suitability and capability of land and soil for specific agricultural crops or land uses;
  • on the land management practices required; or
  • landscape hazards; or
  • any alternative land uses for the property to adopt; and
  • on the advantages/viability of expanding the existing land use.

The Land Suitability and Capability analysis provided may be used in property management planning, crop yield and stock rate planning, local authority strategic planning environment impact studies and catchment plans. Advice to primary producers and consultants may be provided on the region's soil and land resources together with a general suitability and capability classification.  Further interpretation may be provided for specific land use purposes (eg sugar cane).

Additional information

The Soil and Land Resource Assessment Group describes, maps and evaluates the land and soil resources of the State in terms of its suitability and management requirements for specific and general agricultural uses.

The Group also provides land management field manuals to aid property management planning and integrated catchment management.  An advisory service is provided to local and state governments on the identification of good quality agricultural land and acid sulfate soil hazard.

The Soil and Land Resources Group comprises staff from the Department of Environment and Science (DES) and the Department of Natural Resources, Mines, and Energy (DNRME). DES staff based in Brisbane handle queries about soils data access, as well as providing some technical advice. DNRME regional offices handle local queries about soil and land management and related regulation.
