Brisbane City Council has legislation around the requirements for keeping animals

Cats and dogs

You will need a permit to keep more than three cats, or more than two dogs unless keeping the animal is authorised under a development approval from the council.

Guard dogs

Keeping a guard dog no longer requires a permit. However, there are specific legislative requirements for keeping a guard dog in Brisbane. Find out about the requirements for keeping a guard dog

Racehorses

You must have a permit to keep a racehorse. The fees depend on the number of horses to be kept. Find out the requirements and how to apply.

Livestock

Keeping livestock in a residential area, other than a rural or rural residential area, requires a permit.

Eligibility requirements

Your local council may consider the following factors in deciding whether to grant this approval:

  • the land's physical suitability for the proposed use
  • the structural suitability of enclosures
  • the likelihood of the animals causing nuisance, inconvenience, or annoyance to the occupiers of the adjoining land
  • the likely effect on the amenity of the surrounding area
  • the likely effect on the local environment and any possible pollution or other environmental damage
  • other relevant factors to the circumstances of the case.

If you intend to keep a beehive you must register as a beekeeper with Biosecurity Queensland.
