Brands Act 1915 - Queensland


The object of this legislative instrument is to regulate the identification of animals.

The Act provides for the registration of brands and earmarks for horses, cattle, sheep, goats and camels and of tattoos for pigs. It sets out the specifications for brands and branding implements, ownership requirements and provides for the transfer of brand ownership and the cancellation and reallocation of brands and marks.

The Act further prescribes earmark codes, shapes and districts, detailed in the Regulation which also sets out registration fees.

Lodgement process


Inspectors appointed under the Brands Act 1915 have powers to monitor and enforce compliance with the Act, including the power to seize stock and branding implements.

Brand owners must lodge a brands return every year or, after three years without a return, registration may be cancelled.

Fines are imposed for offences against the Act.
