You require this registration if you are going to be practising as a Veterinary Surgeon in Queensland.

Eligibility requirements


You must have a Veterinary Science Degree gained from an accredited body prescribed in Schedule 1 of the Veterinary Surgeons Regulation 2016.

If your qualifications are not from an accredited body, you must successfully pass the National Veterinary Examination administered by the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council Inc. before being eligible to be registered as a Veterinary Surgeon.

Duration

This registration is for the duration of the calendar year when granted. A renewal notice is thereafter issued in December each year.

Application process

You can obtain the registration by submitting one of the following completed forms (as appropriate) to the Registrar:

  • Application for Registration as a Veterinary Surgeon (Form 1)
  • Application for Registration as a Veterinary Specialist (Form 3)
  • Application for Registration for a Limited Period (Form 2)

Registration forms can be obtained from the Board's head office, or downloaded from the Veterinary Surgeons website.

You will need to include one of the following documents with your application:

  • Two references attesting to your good fame and character and suitability for registration as a veterinary surgeon. The references should be given by either responsible members of the veterinary profession or persons of good repute in the community who have known you for at least 12 months. OR
  • A letter of good standing is to be furnished from the Veterinary Board in the primary place of current registration.

Identification:

Also required is certified copy of photo identification (e.g. drivers licence, passport, student ID) endorsed This is a true photo of (FULL NAME) by either:

i). Commissioner of Declarations, Justice of Peace, Public Notary; or

ii). a registered veterinary surgeon (require the veterinary surgeon's signature, place of registration, registration number).

Transfer

This registration cannot be transferred because it is issued to individuals only.

Additional information

You must be registered in each State/Territory of Australia in which you wish to practice.

Where you perform the majority of your practice in Queensland, you must have primary registration in Queensland.  Where you perform the majority of your practice in another State or Territory, you may have secondary registration in Queensland.

If you are a veterinary surgeon and a state public sector employee, you are exempt from payment of registration fees.
