Cyanide permit - Queensland


You will need this permit if you intend to purchase, possess or use cyanide or use products containing cyanide.

Cyanide is a rapidly acting, poisonous chemical that can exist as a solid, solution (liquid) or gas. All forms of cyanide are poisonous. Cyanide salts are used in metallurgy - mainly gold extraction, electroplating and metal cleaning. Cyanide is also used to manufacture paper, textiles and plastics.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this permit, you must:

  • develop a cyanide management plan
  • provide council zoning documentation
  • provide details of any indictable or drug related offences you have been charged with
  • undergo an Australia wide criminal history check
  • have the relevant formal training and qualifications in the handling of cyanide.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

Ongoing requirements of this permit are to review the cyanide management plan at least once every five years or after any significant changes.

Application process


You can obtain this permit by completing the 'Cyanide permit application form' and submitting it to the agency at the address specified.

The agency will conduct searches to ascertain your acceptability as an applicant for this permit. The agency may also conduct an inspection of the premises to assess its suitability for cyanide use.


This permit cannot be transferred.

Additional information

If you propose to store cyanide, especially in large quantities in residential areas, you should contact the local council prior to applying for a permit. This is to establish whether any zoning restrictions apply. You will need to provide proof that zoning requirements are being or will be complied with when submitting your application.
