Electrical work licence - Queensland

Description

This licence is required to perform electrical work in Queensland within the classification of the licence.

The following classes of electrical work licences may be issued:

  • electrical mechanic licence
  • electrical linesperson licence
  • electrical fitter licence
  • electrical jointer licence
  • restricted electrical work licence
  • electrical work training permit

The following classes of electrical work licences may be issued:

Electrical fitter

Subject to particular conditions or restrictions included in the licence, an electrical fitter licence authorises the holder to perform all electrical equipment work.

Example of what the holder of an electrical fitter licence may do:

  • electrical work, whether in a workshop or on site, of building, manufacturing, fitting, assembling, erecting, operating, testing or repairing electrical equipment.

Electrical jointer

Subject to particular conditions or restrictions included in the licence, an electrical jointer licence authorises the holder to perform electrical work to the extent of the following:

  1. installing, jointing and terminating cables to the extent the work requires specialised knowledge or skill;
  2. electrical equipment work necessary for the work mentioned in paragraph (a).

Electrical linesperson

Subject to particular conditions or restrictions included in the licence, an electrical linesperson licence authorises the holder to perform all electric line work.

Examples of what the holder of an electrical linesperson licence may do:

  • electrical work in the building or maintenance of an overhead electric line
  • electrical work in the building or maintenance of street lighting connected to an overhead or underground electric line
  • tests to ensure overhead electric lines are correctly connected.

Electrical mechanic

Subject to particular conditions or restrictions included in the licence, an electrical mechanic licence authorises the holder to perform all electrical work.

Examples of what the holder of an electrical mechanic licence may do:

  • installing or changing an electrical installation or electric line maintaining, repairing, or connecting to a source of electricity, an item of electrical equipment.

Restricted electrical work

A restricted electrical work licence authorises the holder to perform electrical work only of a particular type stated in the licence.

Examples of what the holder of a restricted electrical work licence may do:

  • a restricted electrical work licence may restrict the holder to the performance of electrical work incidental or special to a particular calling.

The electrical work that is covered by the licence must be incidental to a persons trade or calling to assist in the performance of the work of that trade or calling.

The training for the Restricted Electrical Work Licence is not intended or sufficient to enable a person to carry out activities that are the work of an electrical fitter and/or mechanic. The authorisation for the licence holder to carry out electrical work within a prescribed category is endorsed on the licence, together with the related units of competence.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

The applicant must meet the general requirements for an electrical work licence and the eligibility requirements for each class/es of electrical work licence that they are applying for as defined in section 42-46 Electrical Safety Regulation 2013.

Duration

Electrical work training permit may be issued for a maximum of one year. Electrical work licence may be issued, renewed or reinstated for a maximum of five years with a renewal notice sent prior to expiry date of the work licence.

Application process

You can obtain this licence by completing and submitting the appropriate application form to Electrical Licensing.

Application forms, guidelines and information sheets can also be downloaded from the Electrical safety website.

You will need the following items with your application (list is not inclusive - see individual applications for required documents):

  • Completed and signed application form
  • Scheduled fee
  • CPR certificate (must be current at time of application)
  • Details of trade training and qualifications as requested.

Under Mutual Recognition, two scenarios may apply:

  1. Under the provisions of the Mutual Recognition Act 1992 and the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 2003 the holder of a current interstate/New Zealand licence may apply for an equivalent Queensland licence. For a Restricted Electrical Licence the Principal Licensing Officer will determine the endorsements or units of competence awarded.
  2. An External Licence equivalent can apply for the holders of Electrical Fitter or Electrical Fitter and Electrical Mechanic, or Electrical Mechanic licences. Schedule 1 of the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 details the licence type as shown on the interstate/New Zealand licence and the equivalent licence class to which the Queensland electrical licence is equivalent.

Note: All licences must be current at the time of application

Transfer

This licence cannot be transferred to another person.
