General poison licence - Queensland


You require this licence if your business, which is not a pharmacy, intends to sell scheduled medicines and / or scheduled poisons (S2, S3 or S7) by retail. These substances may include cough medicines, pain relief tablets and items which may be purchased from a pharmacy without a prescription or intervention by a pharmacist.

If your business operates within 25km (by road) of the nearest pharmacy, you will not be issued with the licence.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence your business must operate further than 25 kilometers of a pharmacy. If a licence is granted and a pharmacy is later established, your licence will not be renewed after the expiry date.


This licence remains in effect for 12 months from the day it is granted. A renewal notice will be issued to you annually.

Application process


You can obtain this licence by completing the 'Medicines and poisons: manufacture and wholesale licence form' and submitting it with the appropriate fee and supporting documentation. The form provides instructions about what to include with your application and the basic fee schedule.

Before approval is granted an inspection of your business premises may be conducted to ensure that it complies with the requirements set out in the Act.


This licence cannot be transferred.
