James Cook University (JCU) is one of the world's leading higher educational and research institutions with a focus on the tropics with major campuses in Townsville, Cairns and Singapore. The university conducts nationally significant and internationally recognised research across areas that include marine sciences, biodiversity, tropical ecology and environments, global warming, tourism, and tropical medicine and public health care in under-served populations.

James Cook University hosts the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies and ARC Research Hub for Advanced Prawn Breeding. The JCU Australian Institute of Tropical Health & Medicine is also jointly funded by ARC and the Queensland Government. JCU's fifteen specialist research centres engage directly with industry in disciplines such as health systems, tropical infectious disease, biosecurity, environmental sustainability and water quality.
