Kennel/cattery licence (Bundaberg) - Bundaberg Regional Council - Queensland

Description

You will need this licence to operate a commercial animal premises where you provide board, offer training, breed or sell animals. Examples of these premises include kennels, catteries, pet shops and animal shelters.

You do not require this licence to keep animals on your property if you do not intend to board, train, breed, or sell those animals for a commercial purpose, but you may require an approval to keep animals to do so.

Additional information

Your local council may require you to meet certain standards for your commercial animal premises, which can include:

  • cleaning enclosures and disposing of waste
  • providing an adequate supply of food and water
  • providing adequate space for the animals
  • providing separate enclosures in which animals are kept from places used for human habitation or for preparing food, as well as watercourses or water catchment areas.

Your local council may also make other provisions for maintaining proper standards of cleanliness and hygiene.

All suppliers of cats and dogs must microchip each cat and dog before they are sold or given away.

Pet shop businesses may need development approval for the following activities:

  • starting a business
  • changing the type of activity / business being offered at the property
  • re-establishing a business that was abandoned
  • carrying out building work
  • carrying out plumbing or drainage work.

If you modify, update, or otherwise change the premises, you must prove to the local council that:

  • all floors are smooth, free from cracks, crevices, and other defects, covered with a suitable non-slip finish
  • ceilings are smooth, rigid, and free from cracks, crevices, and other defects
  • the internal surfaces of walls are free from cracks, crevices, and defects
  • fixtures, fittings, and appliances are impervious, durable, resistant to corrosion, free from cracks / crevices and capable of being easily cleaned.
