Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal - Queensland


The Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) is an independent tribunal that resolves disputes and makes decisions on a range of matters. QCATs aim is to provide accessible, cost effective and informal tribunal services for the community.

Matters heard at QCAT include:

  • administration for adults
  • anti-discrimination
  • building disputes
  • children and young people
  • consumer and trader disputes
  • debt disputes
  • decision-making for adults
  • dividing fence disputes
  • guardianship for adults
  • minor civil disputes
  • occupational regulation
  • other civil disputes
  • residential tenancy disputes
  • retail shop lease disputes
  • review of administrative decisions
  • tree disputes.

QCAT operates outside of the Brisbane CBD through the Queensland Magistrates Courts, see courts.qld.gov.au for locations. These courts can receive all QCAT applications and deal with minor civil dispute matters including residential tenancy disputes, debt disputes and consumer and trader disputes.

Jurisdictions not included in QCAT are:

  • the Mental Health Review Tribunal and the Mental Health Court
  • bodies making decisions about development or planning and environment issues including the Planning and Environment Court, the Land Court and the State Government Development Tribunals.
  • industrial dispute bodies including the Industrial Court of Queensland, the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission and the review functions of the Public Service Commission.
