Queensland Injury Surveillance Unit (QISU) - Queensland

Why the Support is Provided?

The Queensland Injury Surveillance Unit (QISU) aims to raise awareness of injury issues in Queensland and to inform research and the prioritisation, planning and evaluation of preventive interventions.

Emergency department based injury surveillance:

  • provides a systematic collection, analysis and interpretation of data describing injury frequency, risk factors and previously unrecognised injury events
  • informs the development and evaluation of preventative strategies, generates hypotheses for causal research and monitors injuries in specific areas of known concern such as consumer related injury.

What Support is Provided?

The Queensland Injury Surveillance Unit provides all-age, all-injury data on the occurrence, causes and type of injuries presenting to Emergency Departments in Queensland. The data is obtained from hospitals in three distinct areas of Queensland; urban, rural, and remote and represents approximately a quarter of the state.

Aggregated data on specific variables is available on request.

Data includes:

  • demographic details (age, sex, postcode of residence)
  • ethnicity details (country of birth, main language spoken)
  • date, time and place of injury
  • activity (eg rollerblading, household chores)
  • location (eg primary school verandah)
  • injury cause (eg fall, poisoning)
  • narrative description of injury presentation
  • the nature of the injury and the body part injured
  • triage level and mode of hospital separation (admission or discharge)
  • details of industry and occupation for work-related injuries.
