Research, education or conservation permit in protected areas - Queensland

Description

You need this permit if you intend to take, use, keep or interfere with cultural or natural resources for scientific research, educational or conservation purposes in protected areas managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS).

Examples of common activities that may be undertaken in protected areas include:

  • a university or PhD student studying invertebrates or catching and releasing fauna for a research project
  • a university or high school group going to a national park to study fauna survey methods or water geology
  • a conservation organisation collecting seeds to ensure an endangered species is protected from extinction.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for a research permit, you must:

  • be, or be associated with, a tertiary or similar institution, or an entity that is involved in scientific research
  • (for individuals) be receiving or have completed postgraduate training or a satisfactory level of competence in scientific research relevant to the activities proposed
  • be over the age of 18 if using a weapon to take an animal.

To be eligible for an educational purposes permit, you must:

  • not intend on gaining financial benefit from the activities proposed
  • hold a tertiary qualification or have demonstrated experience and knowledge relevant to the activities proposed
  • have experience in the care and husbandry of the species of animal
  • (for corporations) be an educational institution
  • be over the age of 18 if using a weapon to take an animal.

A permit cannot be issued if you have a criminal conviction that relates to animal welfare issues or related conservation matters within the past three years.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

You may be required to submit annual reports and / or return of operations each return period through Online Services.
