To promote the sustainable use of freshwater fisheries resources and to ensure compliance with the legislation.
The Habitat and Assessment Group (Freshwater Unit) provides technical advice to developers, land owners and consultants on the acceptability of impacts of development and land use activities on the freshwater fish habitat and ecosystem and on the protection of freshwater fish species.
This Unit administers an authority under the Fisheries Act (1994) and Sustainable Planning Act (2009) that is required for the building of dams, weirs, other barriers to fish movement and the construction of any fishway. The Unit also advises on the design and construction of fishways (fish locks and ladders) and barriers across streams.
Additionally this Unit provides policy provisions to the fish stocking program for Queensland. Funds are provided to local fishing groups who purchase fish for the program from the private hatchery sector.
