Tick fever services to the cattle industries - Queensland

Description

Why the Support is Provided?

  • To minimise loss in cattle production associated with the effects of tick fever disease.
  • To maintain awareness of the seriousness of tick fever in the beef and dairy industries and to assist in the control of tick fever in Queensland.

What Support is Provided?

Supply of tick fever vaccines

Vaccines which protect cattle (beef and dairy) against all three types of tick fever are available as chilled and frozen (COMBAVAC 3in1) products.

Each product satisfies the specific needs of different sectors of the livestock industry in Australia with one vaccination providing normally life-long protection.

Tick fever awareness

The Tick Fever Centre (TFC) accepts specimens from producers and veterinarians to test for tick fever disease. Along with test results the Department also provides advice on how to control outbreaks, strategies to minimize the risk, and particularly the role of vaccines in the control of tick fever disease.

Staff of the TFC also place articles in rural extension newsletters and produce brochures on tick fever disease and control. These initiatives are part of an awareness strategy to increase the rural communities knowledge of the seriousness of tick fever.
