Veterinary Surgeons Act 1936 - Queensland


This Act is to regulate and control the practice of veterinary science in Queensland.

The Act provides for:

  • registration of veterinary surgeons and specialists
  • approval of veterinary premises
  • establishment of the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Queensland and a Tribunal, Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT)

It also provides for offences under the Act and prescribes penalties for professional misconduct and other offences.

The Regulation prescribes registration and approval fees.

Appeal process


Compliance Mechanisms and Penalties:

Authorised officers of the Board have powers to monitor compliance with the Act.

Charges of misconduct may be dealt with by the Board or referred to the Tribunal in more serious cases. Penalties for offences include admonishment or reprimand, fines, suspension or cancellation of registration.

Review or Appeal Mechanisms:

An appeal may be made under QCAT Legislation against a decision by the Tribunal relating to misconduct or fitness to practice. A decision by the Board to refuse an application for registration as a veterinary surgeon can be appealed under judicial QCAT legislation. A decision by the Board to refuse approval of veterinary premises or impose conditions on premises can be appealed to QCAT.
