Work Experience Placements for School Students - Queensland

Description

This support service is provided:

  • to forge stronger links between education and industry
  • to prepare students for the demands and expectations of the workplace and become more informed and better skilled future employees; and
  • to help students make informed career decisions by assessing their aptitudes and interests, and exploring potential careers.

Businesses gain promotional opportunities throughout their community.

Students who are at least 14 years old and who are enrolled in an educational establishment are eligible to undertake work experience for up to 30 days per year, without pay, to gain experience in the workplace. These placements are highly recommended though not a mandatory part of the curriculum.

The school usually nominates a staff member as the key contact officer or work experience coordinator.

The direct experience in a workplace assists students to make connections between the world of work and their learning in school.

There are four models of work experience placements:

  • structured work placements
  • work sampling
  • work shadowing
  • research work experience.

Structured workplace placements refer to those placements that are part of a VET in schools program, and take place in a workplace or simulated workplace and are structured, monitored, regulated and assessed.
