Cooperatives Act 1997 - Queensland


To provide for the registration and regulation of cooperatives.

The Cooperatives Act 1997 contains provisions which will be consistent with other States and Territories' legislation.

The Cooperatives Act 1997 introduces cooperative principles and active membership requirements, enables cooperatives to have wider corporate powers, facilitates cooperatives engaging in inter state membership and cross border fundraising and trading, establishes an adequate enforcement regime and enhances directors' duties, facilitates and regulates take overs, mergers, transfer of engagements and reconstruction provisions. It allows for winding up and introduces requirements for disclosure to members when cooperatives are formed and when shares and debentures are issued.
