Kennel/cattery licence (Mackay) - Queensland

Description

You require this licence to operate a kennel or cattery within the local council area.

When deciding whether to grant a permit authorising you to keep animals, Council will consider:

  • the physical suitability of the land for the proposed use
  • the structural suitability of enclosures in which you intend to keep the animals
  • the likelihood of the animals causing nuisance, inconvenience, or annoyance to the occupiers of adjoining land
  • the likely effect on the amenity of the surrounding area the likely effect on the local environment and any possible pollution or other environmental damage
  • other factors relevant to the circumstances of your case.

Councils regulate kennels and catteries to:

  • protect the community against risk of injury and damage
  • ensure that animals do not create a nuisance, or hazard to health or safety
  • prevent pollution and other environmental damage resulting from keeping animals
  • protect the amenity of the local environment
  • ensure that animals are kept and used in a way consistent with the rights and expectations of the local community.

Council may prescribe standards requiring you to:

  • regularly clean enclosures and dispose of waste
  • provide an adequate supply of food and water
  • provide adequate space for the animals
  • separate enclosures in which animals are kept from places used for human habitation or for preparing food, and watercourses or water catchment areas.

Council may also make other provisions for maintaining proper standards of cleanliness and hygiene.
