Commercial Poppy Cultivation Licences - South Australia

Description

Persons intending to cultivate and/or process poppies in South Australia are required to be licensed.

PIRSA is currently in the process of finalising and implementing the ongoing management and administrative arrangements for the South Australian Poppy Cultivation Scheme in time for the 2017 growing season.

Eligibility requirements

There are a range of specific requirements potential growers must meet in order to become an opiate poppy grower. These include:

  • Potential growers must have a valid contract with one of the licenced opium processing companies currently operating in Australia;
  • All persons involved in sowing, cultivation, harvesting and cartage of the opium poppy crop must meet a fit and proper person criteria and undergo a National Police Check.

Duration

Cultivation Licence: As specified - up to a maximum of 3 years; Processing Licence: 12 months.
