Disability Services Employment Check - South Australia

Description

You will require a disability services employment check if you work or volunteer in disability services and support in South Australia. A disability services employment check is an assessment of whether you (as a potential employee, volunteer, agent or contractor) pose a risk to the safety and well-being of people with a disability.

You may need a disability services employment check if you work or volunteer in South Australia in a role which involves:

  • regular unsupervised contact with people with a disability
  • working in close proximity to people with a disability regularly and without supervision
  • supervising or managing people who have regular contact with or work in close proximity to people with a disability
  • accessing records related to people with a disability
  • providing overnight care (with sleeping arrangements) to a person with a disability.

You will be authorised to work with people with a disability in South Australia if you receive clearance from a disability services employment check.

You will not be authorised to work in disability services and support in South Australia, and will be guilty of an offence if you do undertake work with people with a disability, if you are prohibited from working with people with a disability.

Application process

Apply

Individuals may apply for their own check, or an organisation may apply for a check on behalf of an individual. An organisation must register with the agency before applying for checks on behalf of individuals.

During the check process, the agency will assess:

  • your national criminal history record
  • any disclosable court outcomes, such as charges, convictions, and court appearances
  • child protection information.

Transfer

A disability services employment check cannot be transferred.

Disqualified persons or entities

You will be automatically prohibited from working with people with a disability in South Australia if:

  • you have been found guilty of a certain criminal offence or offences
  • you are prohibited under a Commonwealth law or law of another state or territory from working with people with a disability.
