Heavy Vehicle Fatigue Management Requirements - South Australia

Description

You must comply with standard fatigue management requirements to operate a fatigue-related heavy vehicle. Fatigue-regulated vehicles are those with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 12 tonnes or a bus with a GVM over 4.5 tonnes fitted to carry more than 12 adults.

You must not operate a fatigue-related vehicle when impaired by fatigue. You will also need to keep an electronic or written work diary and comply with any other requirements for your circumstances.

If you cannot reasonably comply with any of the following standard fatigue management requirements, you can apply for an exemption:

  • fatigue record keeping and management
  • maximum work time limits and minimum rest time limits
  • mass, dimensions or vehicle standards
  • work diaries.

You may apply for this permit if you are:

  • an employer of a driver
  • a prime contractor for a driver
  • an operator
  • a self-employed driver.

You will need to show that the advanced fatigue management or basic fatigue management limits are not suitable and that the proposed work and rest times are safe.

You must ensure that the driver of the fatigue-regulated heavy vehicle has a copy of the exemption permit in their possession while driving.
