Organisations or individuals intending to use animals for teaching or research in South Australia must obtain a ???Licence for Teaching, Research or Experimentation Involving Animals??? from the Animal Welfare Unit prior to commencement of any project.
Specific animal-related projects carried out by the licensed organisation or individual must then be considered and approved by the animal ethics committee (nominated on the licence).
Studies that are observational or only involve animals that died of natural causes (eg road kill), do not require a licence or ethics approval, but may still require a Scientific Permit.
