Permit to Harvest and Sell or Use Protected Animals (Kangaroo Field Processor) - South Australia

Description

You will need this permit if you intend to harvest kangaroos for commercial gain as part of a kangaroo field processing business.

This permit will allow you to:

  • harvest kangaroos using a firearm
  • field process kangaroos by dressing carcasses in preparation to be sold
  • sell kangaroo carcasses to authorised kangaroo meat processors.

There are two classes of permit:

  • a permit to harvest kangaroos on your land (if you are the landowner), land owned by a member of your family, or land owned by your employer (class 13 permit)
  • a permit to harvest kangaroos on land other than, or in addition to, land owned by you, a member of your family, or your employer (class 14 permit).

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this permit, you must:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • hold the relevant firearms licence
  • successfully complete the relevant field processor courses
  • satisfy meat hygiene and other requirements.

You will only be granted a permit if the field processing will not negatively impact the ecosystem, species diversity or the species as a renewable resource for harvesting in the future.

All kangaroos harvested must be taken in accordance with the standards for the humane shooting of kangaroos.

You can only take kangaroos from properties where the landowner, or landowner-nominated manager, holds current commercial harvesting authority.
