You will need this registration if you own or operate services that involves the use of dogs, such as a kennel at which dogs are bred or trained, or a business that provides security with dogs.
You need to register with the relevant council and will receive a Certificate of Registration. The owner/s of the business need to ensure that all dogs used in connection with the business wear a registration disc with the name and telephone number of the owner or operator of the business (or other mark identifying the business as approved by the council).
If the business is not registered, each dog must be individually registered.
Additionally, the owner of the business involving dogs must inform the council:
- as soon as possible after the sale, transfer or closure of the business
- if any of the dogs are involved in an attack on a person or other animal
- if the dog/s are used specifically as guard dogs, in which case the owner must provide a telephone number on which they can be contacted at any time.
Dogs in custody of animal welfare organisations and veterinary surgeons, assistance dogs and dogs used in the capacity of licensed teaching/learning are not required to be registered.
