Specialist Permit to Keep and Sell Protected Animals (Fauna Dealer) - South Australia


You will require this permit if you intend to keep or sell protected animals of the specialist species in the course of carrying on a business of dealing in protected animals.  Animals of the specialist species are unlisted, though may be difficult to keep, threatened or rare.

You will be entitled under this permit to also keep or sell animals of the species listed as basic in the legislation.

You will require a permit to keep even a single animal of the specialist species.

Animals must be lawfully obtained, such as through captive breeding or purchase from a licensed dealer.

You will be entitled to trade an animal of a basic or specialist species after you have held the animal due for trading for 7 days. If you wish to trade before you have held the animal for 7 days, you must obtain a clearance from the agency.

Eligibility requirements

You must demonstrate experience in the handling of animals to which the permit relates and an understanding of the species specific requirements of holding and caring for such animals.

You will require public liability insurance to cover any risks arising from activities authorised under the permit.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

You must submit, each year by 30 June, a return to the Department detailing all movement of stock from the previous financial year.

You must keep a record of information in relation to the acquisition and disposal of animals or eggs of each species under the permit.

Application process


You must complete the application form and submit it, along with 2 written references in support of your application, to the agency. A site inspection is included as part of the application process.


Permits are non-transferable.

Additional information

You must submit with your application 2 written references which attest to your skill and ability in handling and caring for the specific species to which the permit relates.

You may be required to provide a police clearance certificate.
