You will be required to comply with this code if
you intend to carry out work involving the demolition of a structure. Demolition
work involves the demolishing or dismantling of a structure or part of a
structure that is load-bearing or otherwise related to the physical integrity
of the structure. A structure is anything that is constructed, whether fixed or
moveable, temporary or permanent, and includes buildings, sheds, towers,
chimney stacks, silos or storage tanks.
This code of practice is a compliance code.
Compliance codes are made to provide practical guidance to persons who have
occupational health and safety duties or obligations.
Compliance with this code of practice is not
mandatory. Failure to comply with a compliance code does not give rise to civil
or criminal liability. However, meeting the requirements of a compliance code
means that you have fulfilled your occupational health and safety duties and
obligations in relation to the matters covered by the code.
This code includes specific obligations to manage
the risks associated with demolition work and to meet your occupational
and safety obligations. This code also applies to all types of demolition
work and should be read in conjunction with other codes of practice
relating to hazards and control measures relevant to the construction
