Firearms Licence - Tasmania

Description

You will need this licence if you intend to own, possess or use, a firearm. There are five categories of firearm requiring a licence:

  • Category A: an air rifle, rim-fire rifle (other than self-loading), a shotgun, (other than pump action or self-loading) and any shotgun and rim-fire rifle combinations.
  • Category B: a muzzle-loading firearm, centre-fire rifle (other than self-loading), and shotgun and centre-fire rifle combinations.
  • Category C: a self-loading rim-fire rifle with a magazine capacity of no more than 10 rounds, a self-loading shotgun with a magazine capacity of no more than 5 rounds, and a pump action shotgun with a magazine capacity of no more than 5 rounds.
  • Category D: a self-loading centre-fire rifle, a self-loading shotgun with a capacity of more than 5 rounds, a pump action shotgun with a capacity of more than 5 rounds, and a self-loading rim-fire rifle with a magazine capacity of more than 10 rounds.
  • Category H: a sport or target shooting firearm, business or employment firearm such as for use in a security firm, or a firearms collection.

As part of your application you must be able to demonstrate a genuine reason for requiring a firearm. Genuine reasons include, sport or target shooting, recreational hunting or vermin control, primary production, animal population control, animal welfare, business or employment requirements, firearms collection, show or exhibition, fishing for commercial purposes and paintball businesses.

Your genuine reason will determine the category of licence for which you may apply and in turn this will determine the type of firearm you will be authorised to use and possess.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to apply for this licence, you must be you must be 18 years or over, have a genuine reason for wanting a firearm and have a need for a particular type of firearm. You are deemed to have a genuine reason if you are either:

  • a member of a sport or target shooting club
  • undertaking recreational hunting or vermin control
  • primary producer
  • undertaking animal population control
  • involved in animal welfare
  • involved in a business or employment as a firearms dealer, security agent or security guard
  • operating a paintball business
  • involved in firearms collection
  • showing or exhibiting firearms.

Applying for a firearms licence for personal protection, the protection of family or property protection is not deemed to be a genuine reason.

To apply for a licence, you will need to complete the application form, pay applicable fees, and produce evidence to support your genuine reason, for example, membership card and personal identification.

It is a condition of this licence that the licence holder is familiar, and willing to comply with, all relevant current State and Commonwealth legislation.

Application process

You must provide a statement in the appropriate part outlining the need for the category of firearm for which you seek a licence. In the case of a genuine reason of recreational hunting and vermin control the details of the property where you will be using a firearm for recreational hunting or vermin control must be provided.

Lodge

This form is to be lodged with the Commissioner of Police at any Service Tasmania outlet. You should ensure that your application is signed in the presence of a police officer or the receiving officer. You will be required to produce evidence of your identity and age. Approval time

The minimum time for the processing of your application will be 28 days.
