Heritage Works Approval - Tasmania

Description

You will require this approval if you intend to undertake works on properties listed in the Tasmanian Heritage Register. Works include, but are not limited to:

  • development, such as construction, exterior alteration or exterior decoration of a building
  • the demolition or removal of a building
  • subdivision or consolidation; and construction of signs or hoardings
  • any physical intervention, excavation or action which may result in a change to the nature or appearance of the fabric of a place
  • any change to the natural or existing condition or topography of land
  • the removal of original ornate fireplace surrounds would affect the significance of the place
  • any removal, destruction or lopping of trees otherwise than in accordance with defined forest practices.

To gain approval to conduct works, you must either have a certificate of exemption or a permit. A certificate of exemption will be issued if the works do not impact on the property's heritage value. If you do not obtain a certificate of exemption, you must apply to your local council for a permit. Your local council will forward the permit application to the Heritage Council.

The Act provides a statutory period of 42 days for determination of a works application, or any further period agreed to by the Heritage Council and the applicant.
