All marine farming operations must be licensed under current legislation, and stiff penalties apply to illegal operations.
Licences include environmental conditions to ensure that marine farming operations are sustainable and do not have an unacceptable impact on the marine environment. Leases are conditional, and may vary according to many factors depending on if it is a land-based or water-based marine farm operation.
The process of eligibility and application for an existing or new marine farming lease is very extensive and requires considerable consultation and administration. The first stage will result in the issuing of a certificate of preference to participate in a process for the allocation of a lease zone. Planning of the zone will follow, then the granting of a lease if successful.
Please consult the Contact Officer for more information regarding eligibility requirements.
