Motor Vehicle Driver's Licence - Tasmania

Description

You will require this licence if you intend to drive a vehicle on public roads. There are different classes of motor vehicle licence which relate to differing sizes and carrying capacities of vehicles. Special skills and experience are required to handle the different types of vehicles.

Licence conditions may apply and these will be shown on the licence. A customer can only move to the next class if they have attained the relevant age, the necessary driving experience and undertaken a practical driving test. Classes of licences available include:

  • car
  • motor cycle
  • light, medium or heavy rigid
  • heavy combination
  • multi-combination.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

In order to be eligible for a licence you must:

  • have attained the prescribed age (car and motorcycle - 17, light and medium rigid - 19, heavy rigid - 20, and heavy and multiple combination - 21)
  • possess the required driving experience
  • pay the prescribed fees
  • complete a Medical Fitness to Drive Assessment and be assessed by a medical practitioner (for a Heavy Vehicle licence only)
  • supply the required identification documents
  • undertake any required examinations (theoretical and practical).

Please note that the specific requirements for each class of licence vary. Your licence will also be subject to any conditions placed on it (for example, you may be required to wear visual aids or drive an automatic vehicle only).
