Security Industry - Agent Licence - Tasmania

Description

You will require this licence if you intend to run a business providing security or investigation services. This licence allows you to employ or engage people to provide security services, as well as provide those services yourself without being employed by an agent. Security and investigation services include those of:

  • crowd controllers
  • security guards
  • private Investigators.

You may apply for the following specific endorsements on your licence:

  • crowd control
  • security general guarding
  • security guarding with dog
  • security guarding with firearm
  • bodyguard
  • monitoring room operator
  • commercial agent
  • inquiry agent.

This licence is available as an individual or body corporate licence. You should apply for the type appropriate to your business structure. If you intend to run your business as a partnership, each of the partners will need their own individual licence.

You will not require a licence for serving writs, summons or other legal processes. Please consult the Contact Officer for more information.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for the individual licence you must:

  • be at least 18 years or age
  • agree to have fingerprints taken
  • attach a bankruptcy report dated within the last 4 weeks
  • have set up a trust account for the deposit of money received from your clients (commercial agents only)
  • possess the required qualifications, training or experience (these will depend on the category of licence you are applying for)
  • be considered a fit and proper person by the Agency
  • submit the required form
  • pay any required fees.

To be eligible for the body corporate licence, each of your company directors must meet the individual requirements above, and in addition you must:

  • provide a copy of your last financial statement or a letter from an auditor to say that your company is a 'viable concern'
  • provide a full company extract
  • submit the required form
  • pay any required fees.

If you hold a current equivalent licence in another Australian State or Territory you may be eligible to apply for this licence under mutual recognition arrangements. Please consult the Contact Officer for more information regarding eligibility requirements.

Application process

You will need to lodge your application and payment at a Service Tasmania outlet.

Renew

You will need to reapply at least 30 working days prior to the date of expiry of your licence.

Approval may take from 6 to 8 weeks.
