Sterilisation of Equipment and Instruments - Tasmania

Note that the prescribed standard has been updated and you will need to meet the requirements set out in AS / NZS 4187:2014 Reprocessing of reusable medical devices in health service organisations.

You will need to comply with the prescribed standard if you intend to operate a private hospital, day-procedure centre or residential care service.

The prescribed standard is AS / NZS 4187-2003: Cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing reusable medical and surgical instruments and equipment, and associated environment in health care facilities.

When reusable equipment, instruments and devices are used, the day-procedure or residential care service must have:

  • processes for reprocessing that are consistent with the relevant standards and manufacturer's guidelines
  • a traceability process for critical and semi-critical equipment, instruments and devices that are capable of identifying the patient, procedure and reusable equipment, instruments and devices used.

There may be other sterilisation / disinfection standards to comply with depending on the equipment you will use.

Please consult the Contact Officer for more information and to ascertain the level of compliance (if any) that may be required.
