You will require this approval if you intend to act as an approved person under the Mental Health Act. An approved person includes medical practitioners, nurses and mental health officers.
Approval as a medical practitioner enables you to undertake activities such as determining whether to accept voluntary admissions to approved hospitals under the Act, determining whether patients should be admitted as involuntary patients, and approving or discharging orders.
To become an approved medical practitioner, you must either be:
- a psychiatrist
- a medical practitioner who is otherwise qualified or experienced in the diagnosis or treatment of mental illness.
To be approved as a nurse, a person must be a registered nurse who is qualified or experienced in the treatment or care of persons with mental illness.
To be approved as a mental health officer a person must have skills, qualifications or experience relevant to the responsibilities under the Act that relate to the person's approval.
