Certificate of Competency for the Operation of a Commercial Vessel - Tasmania

Description

You will require this certificate if you intend to be in command of a commercial vessel or to take responsibility for the vessel's machinery systems. There are several classes of certificates of competency depending on the level of command or responsibility.

These include, but are not limited to:

  • Master;
  • Mate;
  • Coxswain;
  • Engineer Class 3;
  • Marine engine driver (1, 2 and 3); and
  • General purpose hand.

Licence

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this certificate, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age;
  • Meet the minimum medical fitness standards including for eyesight;
  • Provide evidence of having completed a relevant course of study with an Approved Training Provider for the required certificate within the last 5 years;
  • Successfully complete an oral examination conducted by MAST or an approved examiner;
  • Have completed a relevant period of sea service as required by MAST. This can be supported by statutory declarations, letters of support from the owner or master of the vessels, record of service books, and / or record of practical experience and study (ROPES); and
  • Have obtained any additional certificates of competency as required by MAST.

All commercial vessel operators are required to ensure they possess a safety manning determination, to ensure they are correctly staffed with crew. Please consult the Contact Officer for more information regarding eligibility requirements.

Duration

5 years until renewal or revalidation (renewal or revalidation will depend on type of Certificate).
