Permit to Acquire a Firearm - Tasmania


You will require this permit if you intend to acquire a firearm. You must specify the category of firearm that you intend to acquire.

If you are the holder of a category H firearms licence for sport or target shooting, you may apply for a permit to acquire a prohibited pistol for the purpose of participating in a prescribed event.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for this permit, you must hold a firearms licence of the category that is appropriate to the firearm that you intend to acquire. A separate permit is required for each category of firearm.

It is a condition of this permit that you are familiar, and willing to comply with, all relevant and current state and commonwealth legislation.

A permit is in force for 90 days from the date it is granted or until the date the firearm is acquired.
