Licence or Permit to Operate a Rodeo - Victoria

Description

You will require a licence or permit if you intend to conduct a rodeo event in Victoria. Rodeos are events that use cattle and horses for exhibitions and competitions in:

  • bronco riding
  • bareback bronco riding
  • bull riding
  • steer riding
  • roping
  • steer wrestling
  • team roping
  • buck jumping
  • rough-riding
  • animal dogging.

A rodeo licence allows the licence holder to hold multiple rodeos while the licence is in force.

A rodeo permit authorises the permit holder to run a single rodeo event on a specified date.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this permit you must:

  • be accredited by an approved rodeo organisation
  • take responsibility for the management of all animals used
  • care for the safety and well being of all animals used
  • agree to comply with the licence or permit conditions imposed by the Agency
  • notify the Manager of Animal Standards of the details of the rodeo 28 days prior to the rodeo commences and ensure that they can attend the event
  • nominate a veterinary practitioner who will attend the rodeo
  • lodge all required forms and information
  • pay any required fees.

Ongoing Eligibility Requirements

If you hold a rodeo licence, you must notify the Department 28 days prior to a rodeo event of the following:

  • the start and end dates of the rodeo
  • the start and end times of the rodeo
  • the location
  • the details of the nominated veterinary practitioner attending the rodeo
  • a list of the events to be held at the rodeo
  • the name of the approved rodeo organisation.

Your obligations include:

  • to provide proper and sufficient food, water and shelter to all animals involved
  • ensure the arena, chute and yard fencing can contain the animals, is clearly visible and will not cause injury to the animals
  • ensure animals are not drugged or hypnotised.
