You will require this approval if you intend to conduct an activity that will create waste that is potentially harmful to the environment. Before prescribed industry or process sites are established or modified, you must have a works approval from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), unless specifically exempted in the regulations, or an EPA approval has been obtained for research, development or demonstration purposes.
Some of the types of business premises that may be required to have a works approval include:
- waste treatment, disposal and recycling
- primary industry and allied operations
- animal derived by-products and food
- wood and wood derivatives
- chemicals (including petroleum)
- non-metallic minerals
- metals and engineering
If you intend to discharge waste to surface or ground water, or discharge waste to the environment you will also need an approval. Other types of businesses may also be required to have a works approval.
Please consult the responsible agency for more information and to ascertain the level of compliance (if any) that may be required.
