Food legislation classifies a food business according to its highest risk
activity. This classification determines the food safety requirements you
will need to comply with. Use the Business Classification Tool to identify
the classification that applies to your food business.
There are four separate classes based on:
- type of food business
- risks associated with the food handling activities performed
- the nature of the food (potentially hazardous or low risk; whether or not
the food is ready to eat)
- who will consume the food.
The classification tool also has four generic categories of food businesses
and food handling activities:
- warehouse / distributor
- retailer / service sectors
- community groups.
