Certificate of Competency - Commercial or Fishing Vessel Operation - Western Australia


You will require this certificate if you intend to be in command of a commercial or fishing vessel or to take responsibility for the vessel's machinery systems.

There are several classes of certificates of competency depending on the level of command or responsibility. These include:

  • Master;
  • Coxswain;
  • Coxswain Instructor;
  • Marine Engineer; and
  • Marine Engine Driver.

Classifications are available at different levels.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for a Certificate of Competency you must:

  • Provide a record of qualifying experience at sea, together with testimonials of your good character, experience and ability;
  • Hold a current first aid certificate;
  • Provide certification of medical fitness;
  • Pass an eyesight test;
  • Submit the required documentation;
  • Pass an examination for a certificate of competency; and
  • Pay the required fees.
