You may require this exemption if you intend to operate a commercial vessel in Western Australia.
Every new vessel constructed in Western Australia, and every existing vessel brought under survey for the first time is required to undergo an initial survey. Every vessel is also required to undergo periodic surveys and inspections.
You may apply for an exemption from survey requirements for a vessel of class 2E or class 3E. These vessels are non passenger carrying trading vessels (for example tug boats or barges) and fishing vessels that will operate only in smooth waters (generally inland waters).
Certain types of fishing vessel and class 2 vessels (trading vessels) are automatically exempt from survey requirements. Vessels are automatically exempt if they are less than 8 metres in length, carry no passengers and do not operate more than 5 nautical miles from the mainland.
