First Class Mine Manager's Certificate of Competency - Western Australia

Description

You will require this certificate of competency if you intend to act in a management or inspection role for certain mining operations. This first class mine manager's certificate is required for the following activities:

  • acting as an underground manager or assistant underground manager for a mine employing 25 or more employee's underground
  • acting as a quarry manager for a quarry operation for a quarry employing more than 25 people
  • acting as the manager at any other mining operation where the state mining engineer has declared that the manager must hold this first class certificate.

Mining operations include exploration operations, developmental and construction work associated with opening up or operating a mine, the removal and disposal of overburden or waste or residues by mechanical or other means and the stacking, depositing, storage, and treatment of any substance considered to contain any mineral and the operation of blast furnaces and direct reduction furnaces.

A lesser certificate may be sufficient for certain management roles. Please consult the Contact Officer for more information.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this certificate you must:

  • be at least 25 years old
  • hold a Bachelor of Engineering in mining from an Australian university or have attained an equivalent qualification
  • pass an examination on mining law
  • have at least 5 years' experience in a mine with at least 3 years of underground mining experience
  • be a person of good character
  • have received satisfactory training in First Aid
  • submit the required forms
  • pay the required fee.
