Licence to Operate a Private Psychiatric Hostel - Western Australia

Description

You will require this licence if you intend to operate a private psychiatric hostel. A private psychiatric hostel is a private premises in which at least 3 people who are socially dependant because of mental illness reside for treatment. You will not need to apply for this licence if the people being treated at your premises are family members.

You can apply for this licence as an individual or as an organisation. Licences are assessed by the Licensing and Accreditation Regulatory Unit of the Western Australian Department of Health.

A licence may be granted to individuals, firms or organisations. The licence will not be granted until the premises are approved and arrangements have been made for the management, equipping and staffing of the hostel.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence as an individual, you must:

  • be over the age of 18
  • be a person of good character and reputation
  • be a suitable person to operate a private psychiatric hostel
  • have sufficient financial resources to comply with the licence obligations
  • fully understand the duties and obligations of the licence
  • undergo an inspection of the proposed psychiatric hostel to ensure it is suitably equipped and managed.

To be eligible for this licence as an organisation, you must:

  • be a firm of more than two people or a body corporate
  • satisfy the Department of Health that each person involved in the management of the proposed psychiatric hostel is of good character and reputation
  • have sufficient financial resources to comply with the licence obligations
  • fully understand the duties and obligations of the licence
  • undergo an inspection of the proposed psychiatric hostel to ensure it is suitably equipped and managed.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

You must comply with all conditions, restrictions, design specifications and requirements set out by the Department of Health.

Your licence will commence on the day it is granted.

Annual.

Expiry

Licenses expire on 1 January each year.

Application process

Renew

You must lodge your renewal application by 30 November every year.

Additional information

An approved supervisor must be at the hostel whenever mental health residents are present.

You may need to provide additional information and evidence with your application if requested by the Department of Health.

Your hostel must comply with the design specifications set out by the department.

The department may impose conditions or restrictions on your licence.

The department publicly lists all licensed private psychiatric hostels.
