Registration as a Veterinary Surgeon - Western Australia

Description

You will require this registration if you intend to practise as a veterinarian in Western Australia.

A veterinarian provides diagnosis, medical or surgical treatment of disease or injury in animals, provides advice on the health and welfare of animals and public health and safety of animal food products.

This registration is also required if you intend to offer veterinary services as a company or as an animal welfare society. Registration is available for two types of company:

  • Where all shareholders are veterinary surgeons; or
  • Where one shareholder is a registered veterinary surgeon and another is a person of good fame or character.

Please note that all veterinary premises must also be separately registered.

Licence

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this registration as an individual you must:

  • Provide an original (to sight) or certified copy of your primary veterinary degree;
  • Provide an original (to sight) or certified copy of your current passport or other photographic ID;
  • Complete the required forms; and
  • Pay the required fees.

To be eligible for this registration as a body corporate, you must:

  • Be a body corporate composed of individual members registered under the Act or be composed of two individual members one of whom is registered under the act and one who is a person of good fame and character;
  • Maintain professional indemnity insurance or capital sufficient to cover potential liabilities to the public or employees;
  • Make full disclosure of company affairs to the agency upon request; and
  • Ensure the affairs of the company are controlled by a person who is a registered veterinary surgeon.

If you hold a current equivalent registration in another Australian state or territory, or from certain countries, you may be eligible to apply for registration under mutual recognition arrangements, or with added assessment requirements.

Standard Application: $125. Honorary licence: $30.

Apply Licence

Annual licence fee is $410. For applications made after July 1 each year, registration is calculated on a pro rata basis at $40 per month to the end of the year.

Temporary Registration per month $40 (up to 3 months over calendar year).

Honorary registration is $50.
