Registration as Owner of Stock - Western Australia

You will require this registration if you intend to own any cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, alpacas, llamas, deer or buffalo. Existing owners of a registered brand automatically become registered owners of stock and are not required to re-apply.

As a stock owner you will be issued with a Property Identification Code (PIC). The PIC will be needed to transfer stock to and from each of your premises on the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) database as required. It will be required to purchase NLIS tags and devices to use in identifying cattle, buffalo, sheep or goats that are not correctly identified when on your premises. PICs are allocated when correct property details are submitted.

Registration entitles you to legally use a brand, earmark or pig tattoo. Pig tattoos will automatically be allocated with the registration of ownership. Brands and earmarks are allocated when the owner indicates they have animals that must be or may be identified with earmarks (cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats or camelids).

When applying for registration, you may nominate your preferred letter and number combination. A brand must consist of an arrangement of 2 letters and a number allotted by the Agency, and an earmark consists of a symbol or symbols allotted by the Agency.

Please note that you may give notice of a mortgage over your stock. While this is in effect, no change of ownership of the registered identifiers can occur without the mortgagee's consent.
