Onshore Exploration Permit (Petroleum and Geothermal) - Western Australia

Description

You will require this permit if you intend to explore for petroleum or geothermal energy resources in Western Australia.

Petroleum is any naturally occurring hydrocarbon or mixture of hydrocarbons, including oil and gas. Geothermal energy resources are any subsurface rock or other substance that contains geothermal energy. Geothermal energy is thermal energy that results from natural geological processes and is contained in geothermal energy resources.

Exploring means conducting any geophysical survey, the data from which is intended to be used in the search for petroleum or geothermal energy resources.

This permit gives you exclusive rights to the exploration and recovery of petroleum or geothermal energy resources from the area covered in the permit.

The Agency will periodically invite applications for permits. Blocks of territory (acreage) are generally released for competitive bids twice a year. You may make a bid for up to 400 blocks of territory for Petroleum and up to 160 blocks of territory for geothermal energy resources. If more than one people apply for the same area, an assessment process will be undertaken to determine which proposal will result in the fullest assessment of the available resources.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for this permit you must:

  • provide details of your proposed exploration work (including a minimum work program proposed for each of the six years)
  • specify the blocks to which your application relates
  • detail your technical expertise and financial resources
  • pay the required fee.

Duration

The initial term of the permit is 6 years. Permits can be renewed (with a 50 percent reduction in area) for two consecutive 5 year periods.
