Permit to Keep Bees - Western Australia

Description

You may require this permit if you intend to keep bees on your premises. This permit will not be granted if the bees are likely to cause a nuisance to the area.

Conditions and restrictions will vary depending on the Council area you are in. Examples of when you may not require this permit include:

  • If your premises is classified as a rural premises and you keep the bee hives at a prescribed distance from any adjacent property;
  • If you are not keeping the bees on your premises for longer than 8 weeks in a 12 month period; and
  • If you are keeping bees for the purpose of pollinating a crop on your land.

Please be aware that you will need a separate approval to keep bees on Crown Land.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to keep bees, you must be registered as a beekeeper under state legislation. You must also comply with any conditions set by the Council for the granting of this permit. These conditions may include:

  • The provision of a sufficient water supply on the land;
  • Keeping the bees a specified distance away from the boundary of your land;
  • Constructing a barrier to keep bees from flying low over adjacent land; and
  • The number of bee hives allowed on your land.
