Controlled Medicines Research and Education Program Licence - Australian Capital Territory

Service summary

You will require this licence if you intend to conduct research or educational programs that involve dealing with licensed controlled medicines, dangerous poisons, or prohibited substances.

Controlled medicines and prohibited substances include, but are not limited to:

  • Opioids;
  • Benzodiazepines;
  • Barbiturates;
  • Amphetamines;
  • Methyl phenidate;
  • Phenyl acetic acid;
  • Kava;
  • Ammonium nitrate;
  • Anabolic steroids;
  • Thalidomide;
  • Growth hormones;
  • All schedule 5 and 8 medicines; and
  • Remedies for alcoholic, drug and tobacco habits.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • Submit a written application;
  • Have completed the approved academic and professional qualifications;
  • Have the required knowledge, training and experience;
  • Provide an explanation and details of why you will require the use of these medicines; and
  • Comply with any other requirements that may be set.

Licences are usually issued for 1 year, however licences up to 3 years may be available subject to some limitations.
