You will require this permit if you intend to obtain biological resources from a Commonwealth area for the purpose of research and development on any genetic resources, or biochemical compounds, comprising or contained in the biological resources.

Eligibility requirements

Permits for access to biological resources are available for either commercial, potentially commercial, or non-commercial purposes. As part of the application documentation, applicants will be required to enter into a written benefit-sharing agreement with each access provider for the resources. The access provider will depend on who owns the land, and may include the Commonwealth, Commonwealth agency or native title holders.

A benefit-sharing agreement must provide for reasonable benefit-sharing arrangements, including protection for, recognition of and valuing of any indigenous people's knowledge to be used.

The applicant will need proof that the proposed access will be ecologically sustainable and consistent with the conservation of Australia's biological diversity.
