Fishing Permit - Australian Government

Service summary

You will require this licence if you intend to fish commercially for Commonwealth managed species within the Australian Fishing Zone. Permits specify:

  • The area of operation
  • The boat being used
  • Permissible fishing methods

        and

  • Species taken.

The Australian Fishing Zone generally extends 200 nautical miles outward from the coast of Australia.

This permit may also be granted for the carrying / processing of fish taken by another boat and for testing fishing equipment.

At present, there are no additional fishing permits being granted, but most permits may be transferred to another person, or another boat may be nominated in substitution for the original boat while the permit is current.

A Statutory Fishing Right is required to fish in any of the major fishery zones of Australia; these are sold at auction to the highest bidder.

  • The details of the boat;
  • The purpose of the operations (such as fishing, carrying or process);
  • Proposed target species; and
  • The fishing gear to be used for the operations.

Your boat must also be equipped with a vessel monitoring system.
